Heritage - The Plaza

Client | Stockport Plaza Trust

Location | Stockport, Cheshire

Services | Extensive Renovation

Key Details | Grade II listed renovation, involving complete renovation and repair / replacement of a terra cotta white glazed building façade. The existing roof covering was stripped back and progressively replaced. Front of house areas had to be completely stripped back to the original 1930 construction then inspected by historians. This then led to agreements with consultants and GFH on the construction techniques to be used to renovate the areas back to new. Formation of a new basement structure was also required to enable a more suitable space to be gained at lower levels which involved complicated structural propping and bracing of the existing structure.

A unique aspect of this conservation was the reinstatement of the holophane lighting system in the auditorium, providing a whole lighting experience prior to performances. The building has been brought back to life as a cinema and theatre and is proving to be successful with the local community.

Note | G F Holdings originally decorated Stockport Plaza in 1932.
